FAQ’S

WHAT IS LOLER?

LOLER is the Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It controls lifting operations and as a legal requirement requires that all Lifting Equipment is inspected by a “competent person” – like an MOT.

HOW OFTEN DOES LIFTING EQUIPMENT NEED TO BE INSPECTED?

Every 6 or 12 months or at shorter intervals dependent on an examination scheme and manufacturers instructions.

WHO IS A COMPETENT PERSON?

Someone who has both the practical experience and training, on the equipment concerned, to detect and report faults and assess their importance.

DO INSPECTIONS HAVE TO BE COMPLETED BY OUTSIDE FIRMS?

No. Your own experienced staff can carry out inspections on your behalf subject to them being sufficiently independent to make objective decisions. You choose suitably experienced members of staff and we train them for you.

WHO APPOINTS A “COMPETENT PERSON” UNDER LOLER?

Your own organisation appoints them and we can help you with the necessary paperwork and systems to ensure you comply with legal requirements.
